EX SITU CONSERVATION

COLD CHAMBERS FOR ORTHODOX SEEDS

This conservation technique is applied when the species to be conserved produces seeds with orthodox behavior (i.e., they tolerate low temperatures and low internal humidity without losing viability). To achieve this, the conserved seed samples must maintain their genetic integrity and viability according to international standards over extended periods.

There are two types of collections preserved at INIAP gene bank as orthodox seeds form:

Base collections (original samples) maintained at -15 °C, used for long-term conservation.
Active collections (regenerated / multiplied samples) maintained  at-10 °C, used for medium-term conservation.

of approximately 900 taxa of cultivated plants and their wild relatives.

FIELD COLLECTIONS

Field conservation maintains clonal crops, recalcitrant seed crops or species that rarely produce seeds. It is done under adequate, safe, accessible conditions and without danger of genetic contamination.

CRYOCONSERVATION

Long-term conservation technique consisting in the storage of plant germplasm in liquid nitrogen (-196 ºC).

ACHIEVEMENTS

INIAP gene bank has managed to cryo-preserve botanical varieties of peanuts (Arachis hypogaea).
