MISSION / VISION

HOW DO WE WORK?

The National Institute of Agricultural Research – INIAP, a leading institute in agricultural research in Ecuador, has contributed for more than 40 years to the conservation and sustainable use of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture – PGRFA through the National Department of Plant Genetic Resources – DENAREF.
DENAREF carries out activities related to conservation on farmers’ fields (seed fairs, bioknowledge and agricultural development centers, biodiverse chakras, germplasm restitution, agrobiodiversity education, among others) and ex situ conservation through the National Gene Bank that currently manages 29,000 accessions of 390 genera and 926 species of cultivated plants and their wild relatives that are preserved in several INIAP Experimental Stations on the Coast, Andes and Amazonia.

VISION

To be a reference at national and international level in the research, conservation and sustainable use of PGRFA, in situ (farmers' fields) and ex situ (germplasm bank).

DISCOVER THE HEART OF AGROBIODIVERSITY IN ECUADOR

We invite you to watch our new video, where we show the work we do in the largest Gene Bank in Ecuador. From seed conservation to research for food security, every step we take is key to the future of our agriculture.
