EX SITU CONSERVATION

COLD CHAMBERS FOR ORTHODOX SEEDS

This conservation technique occurs when the species to be preserved has seeds of orthodox behavior (that is, they tolerate low temperature and low internal humidity, without losing viability). This requires that preserved seed samples maintain genetic integrity and viability according to international standards, for long periods.

There are two types of collections preserved at INIAP gene bank as orthodox seeds form:

Base collection (original samples) that is maintained with temperatures of -15 °C, which preserve the seed samples for long term.
Active collection (regenerated / multiplied samples) that are maintained with temperatures of -10 °C, which preserve seed samples for medium-term use.

FIELD COLLECTIONS

Field conservation maintains clonal crops, recalcitrant seed crops or crops that rarely produce seeds. It is done under adequate, safe, accessible conditions and without danger of genetic contamination.
